Social Media Sharing Settings (OG Image)

Have you ever noticed that when you share a link on WhatsApp or Facebook, an image and title automatically appear? That's OG (Open Graph) settings! Make your invitation look beautiful and eye-catching when shared.

What are OG Settings?

Simply Put

OG settings control the preview screen that appears when you share a link.

Before OG Settings:

https://www.snappost.co/en/invitation/abc123
(Just a plain link)

After OG Settings:

[Beautiful couple photo thumbnail]
Jimin & Michael's Wedding
March 15, 2025, Saturday at 2:00 PM

Where Are They Used?

  • WhatsApp: Thumbnail image and title appear when you send a link
  • Facebook: Preview appears when you paste a link in a post
  • Instagram: Preview when sending a link via DM
  • Twitter: Link displays as a card in tweets
  • Other platforms: Link previews on various social platforms

Why is this important?

Without OG settings, just a plain link appears. But with an OG image:

  • 📸 Captures your guests' attention
  • ✨ Looks more professional and thoughtful
  • 💌 Dramatically increases click-through rates
  • 🎨 Previews the invitation's atmosphere

How to Set Up OG

Step 1: Open OG Settings Page

Method 1: From Collections Page

  1. Click Dashboard > Collections menu
  2. Find the invitation card you want to configure
  3. Click the "Share Settings" button (or the three-dot menu on the card)
  4. Find "Social Media Sharing Settings" or "OG Settings" section

Method 2: While Editing Invitation

  1. Click the "Save" button from the invitation editing screen
  2. Navigate to the "Share" step
  3. Find the "Social Media Sharing Settings" section

Step 2: Enter Title

The OG Title is the large headline that appears when you share the link.

Input Examples:

  • "Jimin & Michael's Wedding"
  • "Emily & David's Wedding Invitation"
  • "Baby Sarah's First Birthday Party!"
  • "Alex & Jessica Getting Married"

Good Title Tips:

  • ✅ Always include the couple's names
  • ✅ Clearly state the event type (wedding, birthday, etc.)
  • ✅ Keep it under 60 characters (system limit)
  • ✅ Emojis like hearts (♥) are acceptable
  • ❌ Too long will get truncated

Step 3: Enter Description

The OG Description is the smaller supplementary information that appears below the title.

Input Examples:

  • "March 15, 2025, Saturday at 2:00 PM"
  • "2025-03-15 SAT 2:00 PM | Grand Hyatt New York"
  • "March 15, 2025 | Manhattan Ballroom"
  • "Date: 2025-03-15 (Sat) 2:00 PM"

Good Description Tips:

  • ✅ Include date and time
  • ✅ Adding venue name is even better
  • ✅ Keep under 120 characters (system limit)
  • ✅ Use separators (|) or spacing for readability
  • ❌ Don't include too much information

Step 4: Upload Image

The image is the most important part! It's what appears as the thumbnail.

Selecting an Image:

  1. Click the "Select Image" or "Upload" button
  2. Choose a photo from your computer or phone
  3. Wait for upload to complete (takes a few seconds)
  4. Verify with preview

Recommended Images:

  • 📷 Weddings: Beautiful couple profile photos
  • 👶 Birthday Parties: Clear photos of the child's face
  • 🎉 Other Events: Photos that convey the event's atmosphere

Image Specifications:

  • Standard Size: 1200 x 630 pixels (1.91:1 ratio, for Facebook/Twitter)
  • WhatsApp Optimized: 800 x 1064 pixels (3:4 ratio)
  • Max File Size: 5MB (1MB or less recommended)
  • File Format: JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF

Warning: Portrait (vertical) photos may get heavily cropped. Use landscape (horizontal) photos!

Good Image Selection Tips:

  • ✅ Photos with faces centered
  • ✅ Bright and clear photos
  • ✅ Photos with uncluttered backgrounds
  • ✅ Photos with text overlay are OK
  • ❌ Photos that are too dark or blurry
  • ❌ Group photos with many people shot from far away
  • ❌ Vertical photos where important parts might get cropped

Step 5: Check Preview

Once uploaded, you can see a preview on screen.

What to Check in Preview:

  • Does the image display correctly?
  • Is the face or important part not cropped?
  • Is the title fully visible? (Not truncated?)
  • Is the description displaying properly?

Tip: Different platforms may display it slightly differently. WhatsApp shows it more square-like, while Facebook displays it wider horizontally.

Step 6: Save

Once all settings are complete:

  1. Click the "Save" or "Done" button
  2. Confirm "Saved successfully" message
  3. Ready to share!

Changing the Image

To change the image later:

  1. Open the OG settings page the same way
  2. Click the "X" button next to the image to remove the existing one
  3. Upload a new image
  4. Save

Warning: Thumbnails of already shared links may not update automatically. On platforms like WhatsApp, you need to share the link again for the new image to appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to set up OG?

Not required, but highly recommended!

Without OG settings:

  • Just a plain link appears
  • Lower click-through rates
  • Looks less thoughtful

With OG settings:

  • Really stands out
  • Click-through rates increase 3-5x
  • Looks professional and polished

I uploaded an image but it doesn't show

Check:

  1. Is the file size under 5MB?
  2. Is it a JPG or PNG file?
  3. Is your internet connection stable?
  4. Did you wait for upload to fully complete?

Solutions:

  • Reduce photo size (sending it to yourself via WhatsApp auto-compresses it)
  • Try a different photo
  • Refresh the page and try again

Thumbnail doesn't appear when I share on WhatsApp

Causes:

  1. OG settings haven't been configured yet
  2. Cache is showing previous content
  3. WhatsApp hasn't fetched the information yet

Solutions:

  1. Verify OG settings are complete
  2. Try sending to someone who's receiving the link for the first time
  3. Try again in a few minutes
  4. If it doesn't work, copy the link fresh and share again

The image gets cropped

Why:

  • Different platforms crop images to different aspect ratios

Solutions:

  1. Use the safe zone concept
    • Place important elements only in the center of the image
    • Edges should be areas that are OK to crop
  2. Pre-crop to 1200 x 630 pixel ratio
  3. Position faces in the center

I changed settings but the old thumbnail appears

This is a cache issue:

  • Platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook save thumbnails they've fetched
  • May not update immediately

Solutions:

  1. Wait a few hours
  2. Copy and share the link again
  3. New viewers will see the new image

Do I have to use only horizontal photos for OG images?

Horizontal photos work best! However:

  • Square photos are also OK (sides may get slightly cropped)
  • Vertical photos not recommended (gets heavily cropped)

Best Method:

  • Crop to 1.91:1 ratio using photo editing apps
  • Or arrange important elements in the center

Final Checklist

After completing OG settings, check these:

  • Is the OG title under 60 characters?
  • Is the OG description under 120 characters?
  • Is the image under 5MB? (1MB or less recommended)
  • Are faces/important parts centered in the image?
  • Does everything look correct in the preview?
  • Did you save the settings?

Final Check: Before sharing widely, send the link to yourself on WhatsApp to see how it actually appears!
